Things We Are Learning
K-2 have begun a new Language Arts program called Superkids! This is an exciting curriculum that combines Phonics, Reading, Spelling, Handwriting, and Writing. There is also an online portion so that parents can practice skills with their child at home. Information will be coming home soon. Look for backpack pages as well in the homework folder.
I am not sure if we will use this app this year.-----We are happy to inform you that your child has access to hundreds of eBooks using the school's subscription to Kids A-Z, www.raz-kids.com. Students can read, listen to, and even self-record reading these books. Reading-comprehension quizzes along the way show the progress that your student is making. You can add the app to a device for easy reading or use the computer. The username and password will be the same as A.R.
In Spelling we will have 12 words to practice. Every five days there will be a quiz. The students will take pages home for homework to practice the words as well as work on them at school.
We will be working on learning the basic addition and subtraction facts to 18. Each child should memorize the facts. Practice can be done using flashcards, apps, timed tests printed from a website, etc.
Our curriculum is called Go Math.
We will use Math centers, games, and worksheets to learn math concepts in second grade.
Listed below are some good websites for math to check out.
Here is a website you can use to print off a number grid at home.
Science and Social Studies
During the first and third quarters we will be working on Science topics. We begin with plants, animals, and the human body in quarter one. The third quarter is all about Rocks, fossils, and dinosaurs as well as the water cycle and the three states of matter.
During the 2nd and 4th quarters we will work in our Social Studies book called Reflections. We will read about cultures, traditions, our government and much more.
Our new Bible curriculum is the Positive Action curriculum. Our focus will be on Finding God's Promises. The main Bible character we will study is Moses. This curriculum encourages building character traits that are found in scripture. Our memory verses are found on a separate page on this website.
While students visit the library each week, they have time to work on technology skills such as keyboarding, searching for books with the computer as well as safe searching on the internet. We recommend our students use this search engine when searching for information on the internet.
